When is it necessary to obtain a Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) in Thailand?

If You stay in Thailand for 180 days or more during a calendar year, You become a tax resident. In this case, as well as for certain types of income, You are required to obtain a Tax Identification Number (Tax ID).

When is a Tax ID required:

If You are a tax resident and:

  • receive income in Thailand
  • remit income earned abroad into Thailand

If You are employed by a Thai company
Obtaining a Tax ID is required after receiving a work permit.

If You are not a resident but:

  • rent out property
  • conduct business in Thailand
  • receive other taxable income

What does having a Tax ID mean:

  • You are required to file tax returns (PND 90, 91, or 94 — depending on the type and source of income)
  • You are required to pay personal income tax (PIT)
  • You gain the ability to apply tax deductions and avoid double taxation
