Visa Conditions: Important Nuances You Should Know

No matter your purpose for coming to Thailand—whether for vacation, study, or work—the first step is always obtaining the appropriate visa. At first glance, the process seems simple: gather documents, submit them to a Thai consulate, and receive your visa. However, there are many nuances that are worth understanding in advance.

Descriptions of visa types and required documents can be found on the website of any Thai consulate. Below are practical questions—answers you won’t usually find on consulate or Immigration Office websites. These typically arise after arriving in Thailand.

1. Entry stamp expiration

Question:
I entered Thailand and received a 30-day entry stamp. My departure is scheduled a few days after it expires. Do I need to leave the country to get another 30-day stamp?

Answer:
You can apply for a 7-day extension at the local immigration office. At the officer’s discretion, this may be extended up to 30 days.

2. Extending a tourist visa without leaving

Question:
My tourist visa is expiring, but I want to stay in Thailand for a few more months. I cannot leave the country.

Answer:
On medical grounds, you may obtain permission to stay longer than your current visa allows. Extensions of 1 or 3 months are possible.

3. Changing from tourist visa to work visa

Question:
I arrived on a tourist visa, found a job, and want to work. Can I switch to a non-immigrant B visa without leaving Thailand?

Answer:
After receiving a job offer, your employer must provide a document package. Normally, you would apply for a 3-month non-immigrant B visa at a Thai consulate outside the country.

However, if your tourist visa is still valid for at least 21 days at the time of application, it may be possible to change it without leaving Thailand.

4. Changing from student visa to work visa

Question:
Can I change a student visa (non-ED) to a work visa (non-B) without leaving Thailand?

Answer:
No. These are different types of non-immigrant visas and cannot be converted without leaving the country.

If time is limited, you can exit for a visa run, cancel the student visa, re-enter on a 30-day stamp, and then apply for a work visa in Thailand.

5. Dependent visa for a spouse

Question:
I have a 3-month work visa and am waiting for my work permit. When can my spouse apply for a dependent visa?

Answer:
During the 3-month visa period, you must obtain a work permit. After extending your visa to one year, your spouse becomes eligible for a dependent visa valid for the same duration.

6. Changing employer

Question:
I have a one-year work visa and work permit. If I change jobs, do I need to go through the entire process again?

Answer:
It depends on your arrangement with your previous employer.

Option 1: Cancel and reapply

  • Cancel your work permit
  • Visit immigration to cancel your visa and receive a 7-day stay
  • Apply for a new non-B visa and work permit (can be done without leaving Thailand)

Option 2: Amend existing work permit

  • Add the new employer to your current permit
  • Keep both employers for 3–4 weeks
  • Remove the old employer afterward
  • Update your visa accordingly

This option requires agreement from your current employer. You may also need to handle your personal income tax during this transition.

7. Visa expiration while abroad

Question:
My work visa expires while I am outside Thailand, but my work permit is still valid. What happens?

Answer:
You must prepare in advance:

  • Ask your employer to prepare documents for a new visa
  • Before returning, apply for a new 3-month work visa at a Thai consulate
  • Then extend it to one year in the usual manner

General note

Visa procedures in Thailand are simple for tourists staying a few weeks.

For expats living long-term, things are more complex: visa extensions, re-entry permits, 90-day reporting, and other procedures—most of which are documented by stamps in your passport.

The diagram above helps determine which visa type is suitable depending on your situation.
