Opening Bank Accounts in Thailand

Foreign nationals can open bank accounts in both Thai baht and foreign currencies. Personal presence of the applicant is mandatory when opening a bank account.

Who can open a bank account?

Foreigners residing in Thailand under long-term visas
(work visa, Thailand Elite, and others) must provide documents confirming:

  • employment
  • or legal grounds for staying in Thailand

Banks may also request additional documents, such as:

  • employer’s corporate documents
  • lease agreement confirming the applicant’s address
  • other supporting information

Foreigners on tourist status

Foreigners staying in Thailand under a 30-day stamp or tourist visa can open a bank account in Thai baht.

In this case, the bank will request documents confirming the purpose of opening the account, for example:

  • a real estate purchase agreement requiring funds to be transferred from abroad into Thailand

Applicants aged 50+

If the applicant is over 50 years old, they may open a bank account for the purpose of obtaining a retirement visa — to:

  • deposit required funds
  • obtain a bank statement confirming the balance for submission to immigration authorities

Important considerations

In addition to general requirements, each bank has its own internal rules, and procedures may vary significantly between branches and provinces.

It is common for foreigners to encounter discrepancies between:

  • the list of required documents published on a bank’s website
  • and the documents actually requested by a bank officer
